After the birth of my son, I felt a desire to get back into photography. At first, I wanted to document the months of his life passing ever so quickly. I was completely stunned by how fast time seemed to move when you have a newborn - with each week gone by, he was that bit bigger and already so different.
I felt compelled to capture moments of his life in my own way - through my camera lens. Whilst I was immersing myself in my new role as a mother, I took monthly portraits of him, watching him grow while his little personality was showing through more and more each month. I loved the freedom of capturing children. After my extensive training in commercial photography where everything is about budgets, complex studio lighting and coordinating teams, the depth, personal significance and emotive gentleness of family photography instantly spoke to me.
Now that I was a mother myself, I discovered the deeper meaning of photographing little ones and their families. It is so much more than just a job - you are responsible for "bottling" glimpses of precious family time, of tiny smiles, of fleeting moments.
"Is photography an art?" - a simple question that has been asked since photography was invented. In order to answer that, we need to look at the definition of making art - which is to produce works which are appreciated for their emotional power. In this sense, family photography is the purest form of art, holding the highest of emotional powers - love. And I am immensely grateful to a part of it.
